Western Canadian singer-songwriter Corb Lund, who we love around these parts, has announced details of new album ‘El Viejo’ which lands on 23rd February, 2024 via New West Records, alongside details of his return to the UK and Europe in May 2024. Lund will begin his European run with two headline shows in the Netherlands on May 28th and 29th, and will go on to support The Dead South on their 2024 European tour. Corb will continue the run with a headline show at London’s Lower Third on June 19th.
Commenting on his return to Europe and the UK, Lund shared, “I’m really looking forward to touring Europe with The Dead South in June. We had a blast with those guys in the States this year, they took great care of us and their audiences are bananas! I’m especially excited for Eastern Europe. I haven’t played there since my metal days with my old band, ‘the smalls’ and I’m really interested in checking out how much it has changed. The Dead South have us with them in Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, and a whole string of others.” Corb continues, “I am also really excited to headline shows in London, Amsterdam and Groningen with my band. It is gonna be wild. So, big thanks to The Dead South guys and we’ll see ya over there!”
The 11-track set of ‘El Viejo’ was produced by Lund and recorded entirely in his living room in Lethbridge, AB with his band The Hurtin’ Albertans. It is Lund’s first album of original material since 2020’s critically acclaimed ‘Agricultural Tragic’, which was named an album of the year by the readers of No Depression. Gathering around his living room, Lund & Co. tapped into his most cherished musical influences of acoustic tone and lyrical aptitude — Marty Robbins, Kris Kristofferson, Bobbie Gentry, Jerry Reed. There is a common theme — possibly even a character thread — of the gambler, the outlaw who roams from place-to-place with no direction home.
“It’s a lot of minor keys and gambling songs, is what it is,” Lund says in a matter-of-fact tone. “It was just a few of us in my house. No studio. No outside producer. No adults in the room. No stress.” He continues, “There’s not a single electric instrument on the whole thing, just acoustic sounds and singing. In terms of having a vision, this is a record I’ve had in my sights for a while and it came out exactly how I’d hoped. We cut all the songs live in the same room with lots of bleed. A bunch of the songs we captured in one take, first time through.”
‘El Viejo’ pays tribute to Lund’s late friend and mentor, the famed Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tyson, who passed away on 29th December 2022. It will be available across digital retailers, on CD, and standard black vinyl. A limited Black & White Splatter Vinyl edition including a Corb Lund autographed postcard, as well as an autographed compact disc edition, will be available via independent retailers and is available for pre-order here via New West Records.
