Curtis & Loretta “Santa Claus On Halloween” – not a burn by the dude in red

Here’s the other side of Halloween, handing out candy whilst dressed up in some form of fancy dress.  We can only speculate as to why Curtis Teague chose to dress as Father Christmas, but that is what he did in a mind-blowing cross-holiday mish-mash of weirdness and unspookydom.  It was an event which became the inspiration for this song in which Loretta Simonet sings in praise of “that boy of mine,” who, we learn amongst other things, “likes love and honesty.”  Hey, we like those things too.

Curtis & Loretta have a new album out ‘Lift the World‘  which spotlights the husband-wife duo’s original songwriting with 10 new songs, many of which were written during the pandemic.  It was funded by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board – which is a cool thing to hear – and it gave an opportunity, after over 40 years of almost constant touring, for Curtis & Loretta to reflect on the world in slow time.  As Loretta explains: “It was the first time in many years that we found a wealth of time to reflect upon what is really important in this life.  As a musician, this translated into many new songs inspired by the ongoing pandemic; songs of clear vision, letting go, and realizing what is really most important in our lives.”

So, there you have it a Halloween song which also hints at the winter festival to come – we’re all fired up for Jingle Bells Fridays come December, should an adequate number of Yuletide ditties come our way.  We also accept Winterval, and winter solstice themes – or anything with snow really, we are fussy but we don’t exclude.  They’ll come.  Whilst we’re mentioning it we’re still painfully short of Beltane songs – folks it’s only seven months until Beltane…do you really want Jethro Tull again?

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
