Don Mclean “Greenback Dollar” – Listen

It was a co-write by Hoyt Wayne Axton and Ken Ramsey which The Kingston Trio did pretty well with.  Here Don Mclean has given it his touch as one of the cuts on his new album ‘Still Playin’ Favourites‘,   a follow up to his 1973 album ‘Playin’ Favourites.‘  Both albums feature (as you may have guessed) covers of favourite songs.

Still Playin’ Favourites‘ spans 100 years of songwriting, with music from country, folk, gospel, bluegrass, blues, jazz and soul  – all performed by Mclean with a rock and roll twist.  As he says “I just love writing songs and I love hearing songs by good writers that make sense and have lyrics that say something and that are pretty simple.  My version is just a little bit more rock and roll, a little harder-edged, with drums and double guitars.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
