Murry Hammond “Drying Tear” – recording in a whirlwind

From that opening whistle, it’s clear that Murry Hammond has got something somewhat different going on, and as ‘Drying Tear‘ expands, it’ll become clear that what we’re doing is following Lee Hazlewood’s footprints through the dust.

Drying Tear‘ is the second single from Murry Hammond’s forthcoming solo LP, “Trail Songs Of The Deep” (July 11, Fluff and Gravy Records). Murry describes the track as follows: ” ‘Dryin Tear’ was written in 2020 while my 97s were in Nashville working on the band’s Twelfth album at Vance Powell’s Sputnik Sound. The awful ‘Nashville tornado’ happened just a day into those sessions, and everyone was feeling low as word got around about various friends and acquaintances who had been affected. We’d come home each night to our little Monkees-style rental, and I’d work on the tune to distract myself from both the tornado and the news that was on everyone’s minds about a virus that was coming for us all. I finished the tune as the band finished the album, then we all went home to a whole new world. I wouldn’t see my 97s brothers for more than a year, but we didn’t know that yet. The song always takes me back to those very odd days recording in Nashville.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
