Sturgill Simpson releases second surprise bluegrass album

What were we saying about 2020 being the year of the covers album?  Well, whatever it was here’s another clincher to say that that thought was a correct one.  Hot on the heels of ‘Cuttin’ Grass, Vol 1‘ comes news of the more than half-anticipated ‘Cuttin’ Grass, Vol 2‘, which will be released on vinyl on April 2nd 2021 but is out now digitally on High Top Mountain Records via Thirty Tigers/The Orchard.

It sees Sturgill Simpson reunite with his acoustic band – now formally dubbed ‘The Hillbilly Avengers’ – to continue the reinterpretation of his back catalogue.    It’s not, says Simpson, just a retread of Volume 1’s formula though: “On Volume 2, we recorded everything I was too afraid to do on Volume 1.  It’s hard to deny that this is a much more personal record. I was thinking about my kids, my grandfather, my wife.

There’s also the appearance of a nostalgic co-write with Merle Haggard, ‘Hobo Cartoon‘, which you can take a listen to right now.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
