Simply, breathtakingly beautiful.  Ben Harper is an incredibly talented performer and, here, he shows how the lap steel guitar can be used to create musical poetry.  It needs no words.  Harper has just announced the release of ‘Winter is for Lovers’, a new solo album coming soon.  The record will feature 15 original compositions, just Harper and his lap steel, imagined as a symphony.  He explains the album: “This is my first entirely instrumental album.  It is stark, bare-bones, just me and my lap steel guitar. Ben Harper & Rhiannon Giddens “Black Eyed Dog” – Listen

A collaboration between two artists who really do require no introduction – but when has that ever stopped us ?  Ben Harper of rootsy blues fame, and also noted for work with legends such as Mavis Staples and Charlie Musselwhite.   And Rhiannon Giddens who broke into worldwide recognition with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and has since released a clutch of solo albums and is Jason Isbell’s closest rival in the winning awards for pure excellence in Americana stakes. Charlie Musselwhite & Ben Harper announce new album

And the obligatory UK tour – no complaints about that, we’re much obliged.  The new album is called No Mercy in this Land, and is out on the 30th of March on Anti-.  To call Charlie Musselwhite a blues harpist is something of an understatement – he’s been right at the top with his sensitive playing for over fifty years.  His is the kind of skill that makes anyone who has ever messed around a bit on the blues harp want to cry.  At least, if it wasn’t so damn beautiful to listen to.  Continue reading “Charlie Musselwhite & Ben Harper announce new album”
