Thomas Cassell “Anything But The Truth” – tell me sweet little lies

We’re starting the week on a Bluegrass footing, with the latest single from Thomas Cassell ahead of his new album which will arrive this Autumn.  ‘Anything But The Truth‘ finds Cassell simply pleading to be kept in the dark: “give me all your broken promises / all your careless lies / anything but where you’ve been / all those sleepless nights / Tell me that you love me / I don’t need the proof / Give me more excuses – anything but the truth“.

There’s certainly a lot of desperate blindness on display, as Thomas Cassell says of the song: “There’s comfort in denial, and that’s what this song is about. Give me everything you can afford to – just spare me the truth“.  It might not be the wisest choice, but it certainly makes for a great song.  Along with Thomas Cassell on lead vocal and mandolin, Ronnie McCoury joins on tenor vocal, Tim Stafford on guitar, Ron Stewart on banjo, Max Etling on bass, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes on fiddle and Rob Ickes on resophonic guitar.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
