With a household full of the Country and Top 40 music of her parents, Houston raised Mabilene grew up with the Trio (Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmylou Harris) in one ear and ‘Born to Run‘ and ‘Rubber Soul‘ in the other. These are influences that have helped to form her debut solo album ‘The Other Side.’ It’s an album of mainly new material, but there are a couple of songs getting a cover, and that includes today’s offering. It’s an ambitious undertaking that shows Mabilene and band at their very best; crystalline vocals are buoyed by steady rhythms, and the string section delivers a dreamy accompaniment that swoops and swells in all the right places.
Mabilene took some time out to tell us about how the song got onto the album: “Nancy Wilson is one of my all time favourite singers and every time I hear this song it lights me up. I’ve always loved singing along. It was on my wish list for the album, but I really didn’t know if covering the song would be possible. I expected everyone in the studio to look at me like “HUH?!”. However, when I brought it to Jordan Lehning, the album’s producer, he was completely unfazed. And when we played it for the team in the studio the response was “FUN”. It took minutes for the band to land their vibey take, and it is 100% my favourite track on the record.”
