The Sheepdogs “Nobody But You” – how did we get here, again?

Here’s a thought we’ve floated a few times before – the best Southern Rock comes from Canada, and amongst Canadian protagonists, there’s no one who really touches The Sheepdogs. Why should this be? Well, through all their line-ups, and the current one is Shamus Currie, Ricky Paquette, Ryan Gullen, Ewan Currie, they’ve just rocked that little harder, had a lighter touch to their music and just exuded an embracing of having a good time. Oh, the Canadian thing? Well, a Canadian Southern Rock band can have a bit of boogie, a twin (or more) guitars onslaught, and all the good bits of Southern Rock without any of the “South will rise again” horse-hockey that some proponents of the brand have embraced. Some, not all, but more than none.

Or, as frontman Ewan Curry shares about today’s song: “The twin pillars of love and rock ’n’ roll come together here in a pure expression of musical bliss. It’s the sound of windows down in your Trans-Am, the end of a workday, the optimism of a long weekend on the horizon. Power-pop vocals and southern rock guitars burst from your speakers like a double bill of April Wine and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Both a testament to the power of rock ’n’ roll and a tender love ballad.”

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
