Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space. As the befringed singer leaps and floats through the air, she sings about the first man on the moon. Anna Tivel’s new video, ‘Outsiders’ conjures not just a trip to the heavens but an introspective look inward as well. Clouds of reverb cloak her voice as wide shots of the stars above fill the screen.
About the creation of the video Tivel says, “When I listened back to the way the song was recorded, all raw and live to tape in a circle of good friends, it made me feel weightless and free and I wanted to capture that emotion in video form. I found a cheap old trampoline on craigslist and sewed these ridiculous fluttery red pants with visions of slow motion flying up high enough to look back from a great distance at the whole strugglesome and stunning thing. Music is so visceral and sensory to me, tastes and images and movement, but I’ve never had the camera know-how or means to bring that dreamworld into being. When I came to Vincent and Eric at Mama Bird with my likely incoherent pile of ideas, they just said hell yeah and proceeded to make my wild anti-gravity space hallucination into reality. Huge thanks to the label and to Eric for a muzillion hours spent expertly assembling endless footage of a crazy red lady bouncing in a field.”
‘Outsiders’ is the first video from an upcoming album that shares the same name. Recorded almost entirely live to tape in Rock Island, IL with producer and multi-instrumentalist Shane Leonard and engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens), the album is a truly collaborative exploration. ‘Outsiders’ will be released by Mama Bird Recording Co. on August 19th.
