The swaying rhythms in the latest single from Freight were made to dance to. “Somehow” features a gentle acoustic strum and lovely twanging electric guitar, over which RP Payton delivers sweetly twisting, lilting pedal steel. JP Payton’s low vocal melody and tone complement and contrast well with Loveday Greene’s clear voice, making for an absorbing vocal combination. JP wrote “Somehow” alongside Joe Rian and The AM Drinkers and the result is a well-crafted song that explores the optimistic nature of love. The accompanying video was shot and directed by Loveday, with additional footage from Terry Bloom. A romantic narrative, in which the protagonists share words from the song, is interspersed with footage of the band performing and reinforces the song’s themes.
Freight is a group of talented musical veterans, who have individually shared stages with the likes of John Prine, The Mavericks, Leon Russell and James McMurtry. Collectively, they create an engrossing blend of genres; Americana, country and blues influences are mixed with adventurous sounds of funk and psychedelia across the songs on their acclaimed debut album “Hard Worker”, which was given an excellent 8/10 here on AUK. A new album, “Old Bones”, is expected to be released in 2025 and will feature eleven new songs – one to watch out for this year.
