This performance from Dobro-legend Jerry Douglas is simply stunning. “The Fifth Season” is an epic piece of music that moves through several phases, each utterly absorbing and full of emotion and atmosphere. Douglas is accompanied by his band; Daniel Kimbro (bass), Christian Sedelmyer (fiddle) and Mike Seal (guitar) are hugely talented players. Seddelmyer’s fiddle is sometimes rhythmic, sometimes soaring, and is the perfect foil for Douglas’s extraordinary Dobro-playing. The video was directed, filmed and edited by Joshua Britt & Neilson Hubbard. The artfully-shot studio footage allows us to see Douglas and his band at work. Watching Douglas’s notes flow and slide and spill from his Dobro is absolutely captivating.
“The Fifth Season” is from “The Set”, Douglas’s first new album in seven years. With five new songs and six revitalised pieces, the new album explores his great talent and that ethereal Dobro sound. Douglas says he’s, “…proud of it. I’ve left no stone unturned. I’ve been producing records for a long time, so I really, really put on that hat for this record. Usually, I like instrumentalists to have free rein in whatever they do. It’s the way they speak. If anybody had an idea, we chased it down to the end. I feel like it’s really finished. I’m really happy with the outcome of this whole experience.”
In an excellent 2024, Douglas was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. He is following up a great year with a huge 73-date tour across North America with Alison Krauss & Union Station in 2025. Check out “The Set” and absorb this magical, extended Dobro experience.
