Video: Jessie Monk “Turns Out I’m Someone Else”

The exquisite voice of Jessie Monk soars effortlessly over sparse acoustic folk on her second single from the upcoming EP ‘Here, Now’.  The tone is conversational as the lyrics explore the humbling experience of really coming to know yourself.  Monk begins by singing: “Sometimes I wonder why I came here // And if this is all just a dream,” before the words tumble from many different faces, reinforcing the fact that this is at once both personal and universal.

Monks says of the song: “I wrote the song in the glow of anonymity when I first moved to Berlin, out of the excitement of feeling the presence of all of these parts of myself that I hadn’t yet met and may never well meet.  I was excited by the fact that so much of what I do and the journeys I take are completely and utterly random and unconscious and have nothing to do with me.  It was a sort of a joyful renaissance with my own ignorance; meeting myself a stranger, fascinated by the new face in the mirror and laughing at the triviality of my previous self assuredness in the face of all this newness and unknown.”

‘Turns Out I’m Someone Else’ is a simple yet striking song from the Berlin-based Australian singer-songwriter.  Enjoy.
