Wall of Sound is the new single from Alex Ellis’s musical project Our Man in the Field. With typically thoughtful, sensitive lyrics, the song features fine storytelling, focused on everyday people and everyday lives, captured in poetic and inventive descriptive language: “Forgive my empty mouth //It’s full of words that won’t come out.” Ellis delivers these words in a fragile melody with an aching vulnerability. Wall of Sound was recorded at British Grove Studios with a host of gifted musicians, including Ethan Johns, Robbie McIntosh, Nick Pini, Will Fry and Guy Fletcher, who also took on production duties. The result is a layered, expansive sound that feels richly cinematic. Pedal steel and keys are beautifully arranged and provide real depth behind Ellis’s vocal.

The song explores the human stories behind the feeling of being unheard. Inspired by a chance encounter with an Arkansas truck driver, whose life has changed significantly over the years, and a television interview with a pub landlord from Doncaster facing the loss of his business, Wall of Sound examines disillusionment and frustration, and what it really means to people’s lives and community when hope and purpose are taken away. Ellis explains: “I was struck by how similar their emotions were, despite living thousands of miles apart. People can endure a lot, but when they feel ignored for long enough – especially when they worry about their children’s future – that frustration can become something much bigger. I wanted to write about that without judgement.”

It’s been a relentless year for the band, in which they’ve played more than 150 shows, including Hyde Park with Neil Young, Glastonbury and tours with the likes of Chuck Prophet and The Delines. A run of shows later in 2026 will include an appearance at Americana 25, the highly anticipated festival celebrating 25 years of Americana UK, taking place on 28th November in Liverpool. This year will also see a new album from the band; Wall of Sound is the first taste of Our Man in the Field’s forthcoming album, Silverado. One to look out for.
