Into The Night is Ardentjohn’s second single of the year, following the energetic Hey Boy. It’s another song perfect for your late-summer soundtrack. Waves and layers of sound immerse you immediately, beginning with Seth Marron’s rolling, flowing drums and Greg Isted’s pulsing bass that keep the song surging forward. Atmosphere and depth are added by sustained keys and flourishes of piano from Andy Philip and Mark Abbot’s soaring lead guitar; it’s a full and rich-sounding foundation for Keiron Mason’s melodic vocals and the band’s fine harmonies to take flight on dreamy currents. Lyrically, Into the Night is themed around hope overcoming loss through carefully chosen language and images: “Into the night, I whisper your name. Sometimes love is all we have.”
Originally formed in Edinburgh, Ardentjohn includes members from Scotland, England and Spain who have remained connected and creative thanks to their shared love of music. The joy they take in writing and performing is evident in this uplifting blend of indie-folk, rock and americana. The new songs are a long-awaited follow-up to the group’s last album, Malin Head, which was released just before the pandemic. Its reflective, intimate songs were surprisingly prophetic, considering the loss, uncertainty and isolation that would follow. The new material is welcome, hinting at hopefulness and upbeat positivity, and we look forward to more releases in the coming months.
