The new single from singer-songwriter Cuchulain is full of humour, presenting us with a range of crazy situations and challenging circumstances. In his laid-back, conversational style, Cuchulain shares things that go wrong, and it’s a theme we can all associate with: “Planted flowers and the ground froze… Fixed the floor and the roof caved in… Paid off my loans and the car wouldn’t start // Wife says we need a heart-to-heart… It’s always something Man, it’s always something.”
Melodic bass from Paul Carberry and Malcolm Orr’s upbeat drums give the song a great, grooving rhythm. Meanwhile, flourishes of brass rise up and help deliver a sense of timeless fun. Parkpoom “Poom” Aempoo plays trumpet alongside Tom “Trombone Tom” Whaley on trombone; together, they fill out the sound and create a positive vibe. In the accompanying video, we can see the joy and positivity in the performance and the chemistry in playing collectively, and trombonist Tom Whaley describes his contribution as his “… drunkest,” trombone solo.
This is the title track from the new Cuchulain album, which is due out on 3rd April 2026. This sixth Cuchulain album was recorded live in his home studio in Eugene, Oregon, and was a chance for friends to get together, have fun and rock out. Cuchulain explains: “This album is meant to be a love letter to my live band in Eugene. We performed together for five years in local bars and regional venues, occasionally touring as a Johnny Cash tribute act, and this record really feels like it captures the pinnacle of that sound. We know each other’s tendencies, we can predict what the other person is gonna do, and we feed off each other. I haven’t had a band quite like that before or since in my career as a musician, and I wanted to capture that sound before my wife and I left Eugene.”
It’s Always Something presents us with a tight group of friends, connecting and collaborating, and not taking themselves too seriously. There are many light-hearted moments, sitting alongside the more serious songs. Collectively, Cuchulain and his band have pulled together a range of influences and genres, including the delicate samba of Flip Turns, the last single, and the Johnny Cash parody I’ve Seen Every Bird. Check it out – music to make you smile.
