Here’s the premiere of the latest single from autoharp-player and singer-songwriter Grey DeLisle. With “Daddy, Can You Fix a Broken Heart”, DeLisle takes us back in time to the country spirit of the 1960s with this heartfelt ballad for the broken-hearted. Over soft bass, a gently swaying rhythm, light fluttering guitar and graceful strings, DeLisle finds a sweet melody with her plaintive, aching vocal.
DeLisle says of the song: “Being divorced with small children is rough. It’s so hard for them to understand why, as their parent, you can’t just fix the marriage like you fix a toy or a skinned knee. I’m always looking for a fresh perspective when it comes to songwriting and this was one I hadn’t come across before. I wanted to channel the spirit of the great old country songs of the 1960s with this one. Long live Billy Sherill!” Indeed, DeLisle certainly succeeds in capturing that classic country sound and feel in a song that is, once again, beautifully-performed.
The single is taken from the forthcoming 20-track “The Grey Album”, due for release on 4th April 2025. On the album, instrumental support is given by a talented group of players, including strings by Tammy Rogers (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Patty Loveless), horns by David Ralicke (Lucinda Williams, Beck, Morrissey, John Cale) and pedal steel by Greg Leisz. After a long period away from music, performing as one of Hollywood’s top voice actors (The Simpsons, Scooby-Doo, SpongeBob) and raising her family, DeLisle is now writing prolifically and this record follows 2024’s well-received “Driftless Girl”. The multi-talented Grey DeLisle possesses a gorgeous singing voice, pure and full of yearning – enjoy her tuneful, well-crafted songs, delivered with remarkable energy and creativity.
Achingly gorgeous.
