Video Premiere: Paul Thompson “Lone Star”

Check out the latest single from Norfolk singer-songwriter Paul Thompson.  At the heart of ‘Lone Star’ is the idea of a star as a strong, certain, steadying presence that can guide us when we are lost in life and in love.  The song features fine, tuneful guitar-work and Thompson’s smooth, clear vocals; his voice is earnest and hopeful, rising and falling through an engaging melody.  The accompanying video was filmed on location in the beautiful, wide-open space of a Norfolk beach at sunset and the expanse of sand and sea is a fitting back drop as night falls.

Thompson told AUK more about the song and video: “Lone Star is the title track of my fifth album, which was released in June 2022. The idea for the song came to me during a long winter walk on the beach at Sheringham, in Norfolk, England, where the video was filmed. It was getting dark, and I sat on the beach watching the last rays of the sun, and I noticed the North Star above me. I was thinking about the symbolism of the star shining alone, and how sometimes in life we must stand alone for the things we believe in. I have written a book of short stories that accompanies the album, and the stories all connect through the image of the lone star, taking the characters and themes of the songs in a new direction.”

You can purchase the album directly from Thompson’s website, here, and receive the book of short stories free with the CD.  The stories are all based on songs from the album and the discovery of song lyrics that connect characters from a dystopian past and a utopian future.

Thompson is known for undertaking intriguing musical journeys on tour.  He has toured far away wild places in Alaska and Canada and travelled over 1000 miles in a milk float in order to play at the Edinburgh Festival.  The latter journey appeared in the book of Guinness World Records as the longest journey in a milk float.  Both of these musical adventures resulted in books that are available on Thompson’s website.  His latest endeavour involved touring in a Bedford Bambi Campervan to promote the new album.  Check it out but start here with the title track.  Enjoy.
