Video Premiere: The HawtThorns “One Human at a Time”

Check out this exclusive live performance video of ‘One Human at a Time’ from Nashville husband and wife duo The HawtThorns.  On this song, Johnny HawtThorn plays engaging guitar, including a gently tuneful solo, and KP HawtThorn delivers an excellent singing performance.  Her voice is clear, pure and melodic with a hint of emotional grit – a perfect country vocal that effortlessly draws the listener in.  Lyrically, this is a powerful song about not judging others based on what you see as there’s often a story of resilience, perseverance and survival beneath the surface appearance.  So, don’t judge or expect justifications or presume you know the reasons for others’ beliefs and behaviours, and just try to get through it all together: “I have friends on every side of everything you can imagine in this life // Good people, crazy people, angry people and lonely people // So have some patience and I’ll be gracious and we’ll get through this paradigm // One human at a time.”  It’s an important message, delivered through a typically tuneful HawtThorns song.

The song is taken from the brand new album ‘Tarot Cards & Shooting Stars’, an absorbing roots-rock follow-up to their well-received debut album ‘Morning Sun’.  The HawtThorns are known for their warm, summery-smooth sound, focusing on harmonies and likeable melodies.  In the best possible sense, their songs are easy to listen to and easy to like.  KP says of the new record: “There’s been so much darkness lately.  I understand why artists feel compelled to write about that, but I wanted our record to feel like a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a happy-ending story to a tough year.”  Indeed, it’s good to have a little light to lift the gloom.

Both Johnny and KP had enjoyed musical success before getting together.  Johnny had played in various bands and released three solo records while KP (as Kirsten Proffit) had songs feature on television shows like Dawson’s Creek.  She also featured in the California band CALICO, country-rocking alongside Jaime Wyatt and Manda Mosher.  On their first date, Johnny and KP played songs together and before long they were collaborating on new material.  They’ve never looked back.  If you’re looking for earnest song-writing, lovely melodies and impressive country vocals, then look no further.  Enjoy.
