South Carolina singer-songwriter Taylor McCall has released an atmospheric new video for ‘Rolling Stoned Again’. Recorded outside, you can even hear the wildlife in the background becoming part of the song’s sonic textures. McCall’s characterful voice is weary and plaintive – it’s a brilliant vocal performance, made more haunting by Sean McConnell’s backing. Wrapped around a gorgeously absorbing melody, McCall’s words are challenging and emotionally involving: “Tell me revelator // Why do I exist // If God is my witness // I hate He’s seein’ me like this.”
The original version of ‘Rolling Stoned Again’ featured on McCall’s well-received 2023 release ‘Mellow War’. He shares: “‘Mellow War’ pays homage to my late grandpa. The album cover is him in Vietnam. These are songs that are sort of letters to home that I imagined he might have sent. My grandpa was a life inspiration for me; it was bigger than just music. The songs are a tribute to everything he stood for and everything he taught me.”
Four of the songs from the album have been stripped back and re-recorded for his intimate new EP ‘The Porch Sessions’. Even more raw and vulnerable, fans will love these new recordings. McCall says of the project: “The Porch Sessions are an intimate batch of outdoor recordings done with myself and Sean McConnell. The tracks are alternate versions from my second LP ‘Mellow War’. I wanted to break down the artificial veils of the studio and bring the listeners onto my porch.” This is music with depth, soul, character – check it out.
