Here’s the brilliant new single from London-born, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson. Come Back is a glorious display of musicianship and songcraft. The song grows steadily, with fine guitar work central to the sound. Typically, for Teddy Thompson, the highlight is his voice, which is rich and warm and tuneful. Equally impressive is his smart lyricism and observations of life, engaging right from the opening line: “I hope you’ve had some time to get on with yourself // And figure out what’s going on.” The song’s narrative finds Thompson seeking redemption and desperately hoping for another chance with a lover he should have done more to hold on to.

This is the latest single from Never Be The Same, produced by GRAMMY Award–winning musician/producer David Mansfield. Through these songs, Thompson addresses themes of love, longing and our constant wrestle with the passage of time. Thompson says of the album’s title, which features in the songs: “It’s a phrase that, unconsciously, I used twice. And when I saw it on the page, I realised, this is the message of this album. Don’t ever be the same. Change. Grow! Even when the sentiment is, woe is me, I’ll never recover after that love or loss. The message is still change. Don’t get too comfortable. Everything is temporary, so evolve or perish!” This tension between comfort and change runs through the album, informed by Thompson’s personal experiences and intimate reflections: “If you sit down to write the most raw emotion you can summon, most of the time it’s going to touch on some kind of loss. People will say, ‘Oh, you poor thing,’ but it’s not that I’ve had more heartbreak than anybody else; I just wrote it down. Songwriting is magical. You can hear one hundred people sing ‘I love you,’ and you know which one is telling the truth. If the root of the sentiment is authentic, it will resonate.”

Thompson’s first new collection in 6 years is a triumph. Check it out.
