Video: The Delines “The Haunting Thoughts”

Music from The Delines is often described as cinematic: it’s moody, thought-provoking, soulful and, above all, the lyrical intent is striking.  Willy Vlautin, a gifted storyteller, creates absorbing little worlds for his characters to inhabit and “The Haunting Thoughts” reflects The Delines’ immersive narrative style.  Amy Boone’s weary voice rolls and flows through beautiful melodic currents while Freddie Trujillo’s soothing bass is the perfect platform for Cory Gray’s delicate, tumbling keys.  The resulting song is full of atmosphere, just like the accompanying video with its muted colours and rain-slicked streets at night.

Vlautin says of the song: “‘The Haunting Thoughts’ is about a woman who can’t shake the fear that the world she’s in is going to collapse.  She sees all this desperation around her on the streets of Portland, Oregon, and she’s worried it’ll catch her too – that she’ll end up on the streets. We wanted that uncertainty and vulnerability inside the fabric of the song. It’s one of those rare tunes that worked from the get-go. It just played itself. Cory’s piano is so great on this one and it’s my favourite Amy vocal to date. Amy has this pure way of getting inside the world of the lyrics. She just kills me on this one.”

“The Haunting Thoughts” is from the highly-anticipated forthcoming new album, “Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom”, which is due for release on 14th February.  There’s a romance to these stories that elevates the songs; this is an utterly captivating album of outsiders and misfits finding love and navigating relationships.  Album of the year already?  Quite possibly.
