So this is it – my final video post of the year before AUK puts its collective feet up for Christmas. It had to be a new festive song, so here is Los Angeles-based duo The Doohickeys, who were tired of the old Christmas songs that resurface every year and decided, “You know what this world needs? More Christmas music.”
With plenty of twang and melody, and heaps of good cheer and humour, they celebrate all the hard work that Santa puts in each year. Their tongues are firmly in their cheeks when they sing: “‘Cause it’s a lot of hard work // To bring Christmas cheer // It’s just him, his sleigh // And a couple of flyin’ reindeer // Since I know that it ain’t easy // Doing this year after year // I don’t put out milk and cookies // I pour that man a beer.”
Haley Spence Brown and Jack Hackett are joined on the track by some great musical talents, including Adam Arcos on bass, Jacob Brown on electric guitar and Jordan Bush on gorgeous pedal steel. With gang vocals from Ben Masters, this is definitely a song to sing along to. Meanwhile, in the video, we see Santa, played by Bryson Jones, getting slowly sozzled on the roof of a house (don’t try this at home), adding to the cheeky comedy of the song.
The pair have put out a new EP, “Merry Happy Whatever”, featuring five new festive tunes to help you share some cheer during the holiday. This year, why don’t you give some new Christmas tunes a spin on the Big Day. Merry Christmas, folks, and see you again in the New Year.
