Check out the new single from Midwest singer-songwriter Trevor Sensor. Sensor possesses an immense voice, full of weary grit and perfect for storytelling and intimate musical conversations. He’s also known for delivering evocative, challenging lyrics through his musical blend of folk and rock, infused with a hint of punk and heaps of personality. In ‘The Farm’, Sensor’s gruff tunefulness over the insistent rhythm is utterly compelling. Halfway through, he lets loose with a searing solo, the instrumental equivalent of his voice, all released tension and vented frustration. Absorbing. Atmospheric. Typical Trevor Sensor.
Sensor says of ‘The Farm’: “The song came to me while I was working in a field. It was mid-summer, the sun was hot, and I’d been digging holes since morning. I looked around and thought, ‘How’d I end up working on the farm?’ I’d probably made a couple of wrong turns way back when to end up here—following my dream too blindly. Nevertheless, here I was and still am.”
The accompanying video was filmed by Sensor’s friend, Ryan Ohm. Sensor explains that it captures “…me in my corner with the desolation which surrounds it. One time, when I was out of work, I went to a temp agency tucked in a dilapidated strip mall. I told the man there my story, and after I’d finished, he said, ‘Well, we’ll see what we can do. We’re not really used to people with dreams around here.’ I think that about sums it all up.” The images of tough places are well-chosen for the lyrical message. This is the stuff of life: the harshness of existence balanced against hopes and dreams.
The single features on Sensor’s new album, “A Few Tears of Eros”, due for release on 8th August 2025. It’s a collection that explores modern love and relationships. Sensor explains: “A lot of songs I hear deal with beginnings or aftermaths of romance…what lurks beneath the surface of happily-ever-after is what interests me.” Coming four years after the outstanding “On Account of Exile Vol. 1 & Vol. 2”, the new record is much-anticipated and promises to be an emotionally impactful piece of art and another fine showcase for Sensor’s distinctive, characterful voice. Look out for it this summer.
Excellent appraisal of Sensor’s vibe and style Andrew. I have pretty much all of his recorded output and I too think much of his work is outstanding. As you say, the video perfectly captures the tough life that is reality for many. And what a line … “we’re not really used to people with dreams around here.”
Looking forward to the new album.
Thanks! I think he’s a real talent…his voice is tremendous!
Completely agree Alan, I am always surprised he’s not better known.
