Here is a live recording of the single ‘Fired Up’ from Minneapolis duo Syvers. The video was filmed on the shore of Lake Superior, which provides a stunning visual backdrop for a song of such ethereal beauty. As we watch and listen to Jake Larson sing, we can almost feel the cold biting our faces and creeping into our bones. The waves rise and fall in the background, adding a barely noticed tonal drone, giving depth and texture like an additional instrument and it’s all we’re left with when the music stops just before the end of the video.
Over hypnotic finger-picking, Larson’s delicate, plaintive falsetto floats up into the cool air and slowly, subtly, the song builds instrumental layers. Halfway through, an understated bass drum kicks in and that pulse is captivating, pushing the song forward. Although the setting is bleak and the song is gently absorbing, it’s also, lyrically, an uplifting anthem of hope and self-love, of confidence swelling and dreams becoming reality.
Syvers is the project of married couple Jake and Sarah. Known for their mellow, lo-fi sound and their intimate vocal harmonies, the duo deliver atmospheric music that transports the listener away. It’s beautiful stuff. We can look forward to a series of single releases from Syvers, leading up to a full-length album in 2023. Check it out.
