Volume Five have done the audacious thing of using a really well known song title for their own very different song – there’s no REM here although there is plenty of mandolin on this song from the Mississippi-based Bluegrass band. It’s a very direct song on how life events can lead to questioning the presence of a creator being as “a hell fire and brimstone preacher” finds that the early death of his child is the insurmountable moment of questioning of faith “I laid my boy in a 6ft hole and cursed God every moment / As the wife and I said goodbye and longed once more to hold him / I prayed for God to change his mind but he made no provision / Standing in the church graveyard losing my religion.”
