Volume Five “Losing My Religion” – Not A Cover

Volume Five have done the audacious thing of using a really well known song title for their own very different song – there’s no REM here although there is plenty of mandolin on this song from the Mississippi-based Bluegrass band.  It’s a very direct song on how life events can lead to questioning the presence of a creator being as “a hell fire and brimstone preacher” finds that the early death of his child is the insurmountable moment of questioning of faith “I laid my boy in a 6ft hole and cursed God every moment / As the wife and I said goodbye and longed once more to hold him / I prayed for God to change his mind but he made no provision / Standing in the church graveyard losing my religion.

Providing this, let’s be honest, atypical bluegrass topic, Volume Five are Glen Harrell on lead vocal and fiddle, Jacob Burleson on guitar, Patton Wages on banjo, Aaron Ramsey on mandolin, and Jeff Partin on bass.  ‘Losing My Religion‘ was written by Josh Miller.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
