Here is the latest single from acclaimed Irish songwriter Brigid O’Neill, who possesses a beautifully pure-sounding voice and an ability craft a captivating song. Cormac Neeson joins O’Neill in a really effective collaboration. Whether it’s in unison, echoing one another or leading and following the other through the song’s melody, their vocals blend seemingly effortlessly and make for a gorgeous, easy combination. ‘Live a Little Lie Oh’ is one of those tunes that stays with you long after listening. In the smart accompanying video, we see the central character transform himself during the song, so that he is ready for a performance by the end. It works really well in reinforcing the song’s themes, creating a narrative for us to follow.
O’Neill says of the song and video: “This song digs deep to expose that itch we often feel to just become truly free in ourselves – shedding all those old skins and becoming any persona you want to be – even if it’s only for a little while! In fact it’s really about getting back to who you truly are. Its vibe is upbeat, positive and fun. I wrote it with friend and fellow Co Down singer songwriter Cormac Neeson (singer from The Answer) getting together despite all before, during and after the pandemic and love the way his brilliant voice accompanies mine throughout. It was really great to get together with Cormac Neeson to sing the song, and to work with videographer Jamie Neish of Broken Film to develop ideas for a narrative that would reflect the story behind the song. There’s drama and a tension in the film and storyline I feel, which echoes the build and momentum as the song gathers. While the principle idea of ‘shedding skins’, freeing oneself from a rut you may find yourself in to become something true to yourself is expressed, I like the ambiguity in the narrative and story line depicted. It can mean different things to different people. I love the understated work of Conor Charlton, the actor we chose for the video, and the overall lighting, mood and vibe created by Jamie and want to thank them both for their great work!”
‘Live a Little Lie Oh’ is out now and is a taste of what’s to come from her forthcoming new album, which was recorded in Nashville with renowned producer Neilson Hubbard (Mary Gauthier, The Orphan Brigade). Building on her previous work, it blends various genres, including folk, country and jazz to create a fresh, new sound. Having played in venues far and wide, from Nashville’s famous Bluebird Cafe to the Grand Opera House in Belfast, O’Neill has steadily built a much-deserved following. Check it out.
