The first and second waves of the 37th annual Texan showcase of new music SXSW lineup have been released, and once again, it looks to be the sound of tomorrow. Texas and March may be far away, but the music is always close. Americana UK journos trawled through the 400+ artists to bring you a list of what hot new Americana artists you could be playing next year. You heard them here first. The GOLDEN DREGS is Cornwall-born songwriter and producer Benjamin Woods who has been putting out music for just over a decade. His third album ‘On Grace and Dignity‘ is out in February and has its roots in his time working as a labourer in Truro after the lockdown. For fans of Leonard Cohen and rootsy lyrics.
This three-piece from Scotland released their debut album ‘Never is, Nor Ever Was‘ just a few months ago. They describe themselves as “soaring ambient dream pop experimental folk music”; Americana UK hears acoustic guitars and the truth. Read our review of their single ‘Weave of the World’ here.
Singer-songwriter Izzy Heltai lived in Boston with his mom and celebrated coming out as a Trans artist with his debut album ‘Father‘ this Autumn. Channelling the 60 folk rock his parents played him, Heltai has called this album his “Bon Iver phase”. This artist, who is genuinely connected to people and places, is an obvious one to watch. Left-field artist Pearla is Nicole Rodriguez, a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter whose personal interests include finger puppets, writing songs with children, Virginia Woolf’s prose, and consulting the I ching. Pearla plays guitars and sings the soundtrack to your dreams of New York lovers you have yet to meet. With only a handful of singles and a debut album scheduled for release in February, now is a perfect time to get into this intriguing musician.
Philly singer-songwriter Sug Daniels plays an electric Fender Fullerton Ukulele Strat(!) to combine elements of folk and lo-fi and make refreshingly new Americana. Daniels is from a post-album era and has released a steady stream of singles, with no album yet announced.
