The first and second waves of the 37th annual Texan showcase of new music SXSW lineup have been released, and once again, it looks to be the sound of tomorrow. Texas and March may be far away, but the music is always close. Americana UK journos trawled through the 400+ artists to bring you a list of what hot new Americana artists you could be playing next year. You heard them here first. This is day six of a Twelve-part series that explores this showcase; enjoy all of these artists “six ‘gators laying, five rhinestone suits, four open roads, three fresh hats, two bald eagles, and a pardner in a pantry”.
This Austin 4-piece band are very new and very upcoming. They have had two successful singles so far and are moving their small-scale gigging to the festival scene in 2023. Once again, Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s name has cropped up since they are touring with him this January. The West Texas Exiles are good-souled musicians to earmark.
The 22-year-old Canadian has been making waves on both sides of the Atlantic since her first album ‘Just Like Leaving‘ came out in 2020. She has had three singles this year from what will be her sophomore album. Her music is influenced by her bluegrass playing Appalachian Father and is tempered by her fresh, youthful approach. Rick Bayles of her songs said, “Her songs are open and honest and the simple, traditional style arrangements unfussy but glaring in their strength and subtlety“.
This award-winning six-piece from New Brunswick, Canada, had their first signed album ‘Waitin’, out this year, but the members have been making music since before their first album in 2017. For fans of steel ballads, close harmonies, and Memphis soul.
New Zealand Nick Stone and Colorado native Dani Cichon met building houses in South America. After some success playing in Christchurch, they took the plunge and moved to Nashville, where Alex joined the band on Cello. South for Winter has toured over twenty-one US States and two Canadian provinces in the last two years. South for Winter is currently in the studio with award-winning producer Matt Leigh for their sophomore album, with the first single to come in Spring 2023. Tim Newby described the first album ‘Luxumbra‘ (2020), as “A complex meditation on life, an ethereal, dreamy journey sharpened with an underlying aggressive blues-edge“.
Holly Montgomery’s career spans nearly three decades, and she is no newcomer. Originally Montgomery was the bassist for the female 90s band The Mustangs of the West. Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, she was inspired by Rush’s ‘Spirit of the Radio’ to pick up the bass. She cites Led Zepellin, Dolly Parton, and John Denver as influences and has played in projects with David Bowie, Frank Zappa, and Jefferson Starship. Her new album ‘Sorry for Nothing‘ is personal, extraordinarily well-produced, and a perfect slice of Americana.
