Wow – what a vocal performance. Miko Marks displays her range, control and the sheer emotional quality of her voice in ‘I’ll Cry for Yours’. Her delivery is so authentic and full of feeling that this is a song to be swept along with, to lose yourself in. With apparent ease, Marks combines Americana, blues and gospel influences and shares the music of her soul.
This is taken from the album ‘My Black Country: The Songs of Alice Randall’, a collaborative album designed to celebrate the experience and achievements of black women in country and folk music. Released on John Prine’s Oh Boy Records, the project was led by Ebonie Smith (Hamilton, Cardi B, Sturgill Simpson) and features a host of talented artists, including Rhiannon Giddens, Allison Russell and Valerie June. Miko Marks says: “Working on this project, and with Alice, was something I didn’t know I needed. The song really brought up emotions for me as a mother that I would not want to go through. It was second nature for me to tap into its message. I can’t imagine sharing loss with another mother in grief together, and shooting the video was a very emotional experience for me. I am so grateful to be able to give the song real feeling that I can relate to. This is history, and being a part of this record with amazing black women is a triumphant moment.”
Alice Randall adds: “Miko Marks is claiming the universality of the Black and female and Country. Raw and ready, she sings the necessity of mourning; the truth is we damage each other, and we can redeem each other; the water of tears is water we can breathe…”
Alongside the album, Randall is publishing a book, also titled ‘My Black Country’ that explores the rich history of black women in the genre. As well as being a tribute to the history of black country, the book is a memoir that follows her musical journey through the decades. Check out the album and be absorbed. While you’re at it, take another listen to Marks’ 2022 album ‘Feel Like Going Home’. Enjoy.
