Mean Mary has announced the release date of her new album “Woman Creature ( Portrait of a Woman, Part 2 )” on October 4th 2024. Mainly recorded at Mary’s home studio, the album showcases her gifts as a songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. No studio gimmickry is needed here. The record, her 19th studio release, continues her remarkable evolution as an artist which began with her first album recorded at the age of six. Nineteen albums later Mary plays a variety of instruments, including the 5 and 6-string banjo, acoustic and electric guitar, violin, and castanets and the songs range from soulful murder ballads to raucous foot stompers.
Mary is joined by her brother Frank James, who lends his 12-string guitar and vocals on multiple tracks as well as the addition of jungle animal sounds on the track ‘Tarzan’. Mary’s mother, author (and former Florida “snake-catcher”) Jean James, co-writes six of the tracks, reinforcing the reasons why the mother-daughter duo are award winners.
Of the title track Mary remarks “This song is both the silliest and most meaningful on the album to me. It’s a classic horror movie in song form, featuring a misunderstood monster, which feels like my life sometimes! I had so much fun creating the music and howling like a werewolf!”
“Woman Creature (Portrait of a Woman, Part. 2)” is the hotly anticipated follow-up to the 2022 release “Portrait of a Woman Part 1” and confirms Mean Mary as not only prolific but also good at keeping her promises. There is yet to be talk of “Part 3” but given her prodigious output, don’t rule it out. Two singles will be released prior to the album, along with accompanying videos – the aforementioned ‘Tarzan’ on September 6, followed by ‘Murder Creek’ on September 20, and a video for the title track will drop on album release day.
