It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Detroit singer-songwriter Jeff Karoub, but he’s been working both on his songs and the sound in his arrangements. Take ‘Come Back To Ourselves‘, which is a soulful plea for a renewal of good faith and reasonableness. Nice idea. For this song, Jeff decided early on that what it needed to give it real impact was a horn section – a natural fit, really, as it allowed him to “pay tribute to the timeless grooves laid down in Detroit, Memphis and New Orleans. I feel like I come by some of these aspirations honestly, as the son of a Motown session musician who played French horn on some classic tracks recorded in Motown’s Studio A on West Grand Boulevard.”
The realisation of the sound did, though, require a little luck, as Jeff explained: “It was serendipitous some months ago to stumble upon the music and Ann Arbor, Michigan, studio of Darrin James, who frequently works with some killer horn players (Ross Huff, Dan Bennett and Tim Haldeman). Recording with them was everything I hoped for, as they captured the spirit of what I was trying to sonically convey.”
