‘Where Did You Go?’ is the latest single from Arthur Buck, the musical partnership of superb singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur and acclaimed guitarist Peter Buck. Featuring melodic, jangling guitars and gorgeous harmonies in the chorus, the song feels like musical sunshine, especially as it rises on angelic backing towards the end. As ever, Arthur’s voice is simply brilliant; his low, resonant tones are distinctive and pull you into any song, although it’s exhausting just watching him running along while singing throughout the video.
This release follows the summertime singles ‘Sleep With One Eye Open’ and ‘Fall in Love With Me’, all from the brand-new album “Arthur Buck 2”, the pair’s first collaboration since their acclaimed debut in 2018. The friends first met back in the year 2000 when Arthur supported R.E.M. for a series of tour dates. Buck sometimes joined Arthur on stage in the years that followed. But writing and performing together as Arthur Buck was a delightful accident. In 2016, Arthur had been invited to perform at Todos Santos Music Festival, presented by Buck and taking place near his home. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Arthur left his Dobro behind and had to return the following year in the hope of finding it. The friends ending up spending the next few days together, swimming in the ocean and playing guitar. When Arthur shared some ideas for new material, it was the spark for creative collaboration that would see them record eight new songs in just over three days. Their first performance as Arthur Buck was just a few days later at a benefit show for local firefighters. The rest of the album came together just as quickly, but the resulting blend of rock and indie-folk sounded anything but thrown together, demonstrating the quality of these two players and songwriters.
For the new record, the duo have teamed up with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, Taylor Swift), and “Arthur Buck 2” will be another critical triumph. Musical Joy – check it out.
