GA-20 & Charlie Musselwhite “Crazy Love” – crazy ’bout my lovin’

Famously, we don’t really cover the Blues here at Americana UK, and equally famously, we do cover Charlie Musselwhite, whose distinctive sound fits in well amongst proto-americana contemporaries. Which is by way of explanation for today’s contribution to all-star fortnight: GA-20 & Charlie Musselwhite with the song Crazy Love, which was penned by Willie Dixon and first recorded by Buddy Guy. GA-20’s Matthew Stubbs says, “This song has all of the elements we look for: the attitude, Chicago blues-based, with a soul/garage approach. Buddy Guy is a favourite, and this tune is not one easily found. It’s a hidden Buddy Guy gem.”

Crazy Love is taken from the new album Blues Now, which will be out on July 31st and features songs by Elmore James, Junior Wells, Eddie Taylor, and more. Also included were two favourites from Musselwhite’s lauded 1968 debut, Stand Back! (an album, incidentally, that we cannot recommend too highly). GA-20’s Matthew Stubbs says of the new album, “We tried to find songs that Charlie had a connection to or artists that he knew personally from Chicago, but also just songs that we liked and thought we could do justice. The GA-20 sound historically has been in that ballpark of raw Chicago Blues from the late ’50s and early ’60s, but we didn’t want to simply recreate Stand Back!; we just wanted to be influenced by it. We wanted to capture the spirit of that record.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
