Twilark “Tired To Sleep” – to sleep , perchance to forget

I never wanted to need anyone or anything” sings Twilark (aka Canon Pence) on this woozy love song that drifts between states of needing, rejecting, feeling morose and maybe just a little confused.  There’s a hint of why Twilark is feeling this way in that he cites both whisky and the lateness of the night as factors, and in fact has explained that “Perhaps unsurprisingly, this song was written while wallowing in a hangover, the lyrics reflecting this with darkness, humor, and self-awareness. Drink some water and go back to sleep.

Tired To Sleep is taken from the upcoming Never Learned The Tide, which is released on September 11th.  And those backing vocals you can hear come from Erin Rae and  Dominic Billett.  It’s an album which sees the lifelong North Carolinian telling a number of personal tales with a wry deadpan wit that balances what could be the exposure of deep truths against a knowing self-deprecation that keeps the revelations in the realm of the palatable.  Never Learned The Tide, is, by the way, Canon Pence’s second album as Twilark.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
