We’re delighted to premiere the latest video from Canadian singer-songwriter Bob Sumner. Baby I Know is a typically melodic, country-infused ballad that showcases Sumner’s outstanding voice. Smooth and resonant, sweetly melancholic, rising high before dipping low and filled with storytelling magic, Bob Sumner’s vocal is perfect for sorrowful songs like this.
Baby I Know is rich with instrumentation, delivered by a team of gifted players; sumptuous layers of sound overlap and come in waves, washing over us in beautifully weary melody. Vancouver’s Scotty Smith provides a forlorn harmonica solo while Chris Gestrin’s spare and lonely piano tumbles slowly through the notes. There are such delicate, sensitive contributions from Etienne Tremblay on nylon-string guitar and Leon Power’s percussion. It’s an understated lightness of touch that serves the song perfectly. All of these textures are lifted by the lush strings, arranged by producer and bassist Erik Nielsen and performed by Trent Freeman. The final touch is the lilting, swaying pedal steel work of Matt Kelly, which transports to another time and place.
Sumner says, “We are all terribly proud of this track. Without feeling as though we were reinventing the wheel, we all felt we did justice to the great tradition of the sad country ballad. I hear this one at closing time, through the tired speakers of a jukebox.” Indeed, and this is one to listen to with the lights low, nursing a smoky-flavoured, amber-hued drink or two.
For the accompanying video, Sumner collaborated once again with director Dana Bontempo, whose genuine creativity and innovative approaches enhanced four previous releases, including Motel Room, a visual remembered for Bob’s viral dance moves. The soft-focus, retro-styled footage reinforces the song’s sense of nostalgia and classic feel.
This is the fifth video to be released from Sumner’s latest album, Some Place to Rest Easy, an album that shimmered with a new energy and featured more adventurous instrumentation and arrangements. With this sophomore release, via Fluff & Gravy Records (World) and North Country Collective (Canada), Sumner developed his craft and confidence, building on his acclaimed debut, Wasted Love Songs, which itself was filled with gorgeous, emotive balladry.
Songs from both albums can be absorbed live in the UK during May and June. Bob Sumner is a captivating performer, and these shows come highly recommended. Tickets are available here.
