Here’s the new tender, intimate new single from Shannon Lay. Beginning with delicate guitar, sounds are added in subtle layers, so that Horizons slowly builds; there are heavenly backing vocals, flourishes of keys, and notes that fall into the song like melodic droplets, collectively creating a gentle, dreamily immersive song. Lay’s understated, confessional vocal is sweetly tuneful. Throughout her performance, Lay appears completely lost in her music; indeed, Horizons is an absorbing song, and Lay captivates listeners with her mesmerising style.
Lay explains: “‘Horizons’ is a reminder to be authentic. We all have a unique perspective, and that’s what makes this whole experience so interesting. I love art for that reason; it is someone’s view of the world on display. We need to be as much as we want to be and keep our head up high and we traverse uncertainty. Every step forward makes a difference.”
Directed by Bailey Salwey, the accompanying video features washed-out colours, clever use of light and overlapping images, evoking the feel of dreamy summer days.
This is the second single from the upcoming album Past The Veil, which is due out on 28th July via artist-run label All The Best. The album has expansive sounds and arrangements, reflecting her more open mindset as she has navigated big changes in her life and the world around her, not least parting ways with her previous record label. This encouraged self-reliance and independence of mind and spirit, which Lay channelled into her music; her minimalist arrangements have evolved into songs that are equally reflective but more sonically adventurous.
