One More Mile is the latest single from The Suitcase Junket, the recording name of poetic folkster Matt Lorenz. It’s a song that in a sense belies it’s upbeat tempo and optimistic feel – it’s taken from the album To Go On which Matt Lorenz mostly recorded in the wake of the death of his sister singer-songwriter Kate Lorenz. One More Mile is the exception on the record – it was recorded prior to Kate’s passing – but it shares a theme as matt Lorenz explains: “It’s about another dear friend who was dying. She was in her nineties and died in a way that was very different from Kate. Grief is universal, but it’s as unique as the relationship you lost.”
Over the last twenty years The Suitcase Junket has wed the sensibilities of early blues and rock ‘n’ roll, the improvisational spirit of jazz, and Lorenz’s love of Tom Waits to make a meticulous, cultured songcraft. It’s a sound that he has stayed loyal to on this latest release, although Lorenz confesses that “There were certainly times when I just wanted to make the saddest record ever, but I like a well-balanced piece of art, where you can tap your toe, or dance even, and still think about death.”
To Go On is out on October 2nd via Bad Chef Records/Symphonic.
