Video: John Carter Cash “Pineapple John” – finding yourself in the sea’s reflection

Here’s a new animated video for John Carter Cash’s recent song, Pineapple John. This vibrant animation, filled with vivid colour, was developed from original artwork created by Adam Baker, whose illustrations transport us into the fantasy world of Pineapple John, a character who represents the search for dreams that continue to lie just beyond our reach, while still finding joy and hope along the way. The animation, given life by Zack Wells and his team, brings island adventure and the feel of a tropical ocean paradise to the story of Pineapple John and his journey of self-discovery: “You finally find yourself in the sea’s reflection.” This is life’s struggles and adventures threaded through with beauty, sunshine and humour, and the video is a perfect visual accompaniment to music that draws on traditional calypso as well as folk and country.

John Carter Cash says of the video: “One of the things I love most about this project is that it encourages people to slow down and experience music as a complete work of art. People will spend hours immersed in a great film or a great book, but we’ve lost some of that connection to sitting with an album, absorbing the music, and exploring the artwork that helps tell the story. This video is an extension of that experience.”

Co-written by John Carter Cash and Jack Ezra Cash, the song features a wildly eclectic collection of instruments, including: John’s 12-String Guitar, sea pods, tuna sticks, frog drum, Wurlitzer, organ, bongos, accordion, mandolin, fiddle, viola and more, all of which give it a brightly-layered adventurous feel. It’s the title track from Cash’s latest album, which is an acclaimed collection of songs that realise John Carter Cash’s storytelling and coherent vision.

Cash is a GRAMMY-winning producer as well as a musician and author. He has produced hundreds of songs for the likes of Loretta Lynn, Elvis Costello, Mavis Staples, Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson. In an extensive career in music, he has contributed to six GRAMMY-winning projects as a producer, writer, or collaborator, in addition to picking up two himself.
