Andy Brasher delivers a lovely country vocal on ‘Myna Bird’, the title track from his brand-new debut album. The song was produced by Grammy-winner Ross Hogarth (Keb’ Mo’, John Mellencamp, REM) and Harry Lee Smith (Martina McBride) and their expertise is evident in its warmth and depth. Although she probably meant ‘mockingbird’, Brasher’s mother used to call him ‘Myna Bird’ because of his ability to quickly learn and memorise song lyrics from the radio when he was younger.
The song is also a tribute to Brasher’s friend and mentor, the late honky tonk performer Wayne Mills. Brasher notes about Mills: “He spent his whole life going out there and playing music. His original music was every bit the truth…it was so great but he was running himself ragged getting to and from these bars, forced to play ‘Wagon Wheel’ and ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ over and over.” Like the myna bird, he ended up constantly playing those same songs – that’s what folks wanted to hear. ‘Myna bird’ is personal, intimate and well-crafted.
