This is simply, stunningly beautiful. This latest version of ‘I Am the River’ features on Tom Houston’s new solo album, ‘Gap in the Fence’, produced by Neill MacColl. Houston has pulled together an incredible group of musicians, including Mary Erskine (backing vocals, cello), Kate St John (piano) and Ben Nicholls (double bass), all of whom can be seen in the video recording their parts separately and demonstrating their talents.
In part, the song was inspired by the Whanguanui River in New Zealand, which is sacred to the Māori and which recently had a legal settlement relating to its identity pass through the New Zealand parliament. Houston explains: “In 2018 I was forming the song but wasn’t sure what it should be about. When I read about the Whanganui River it instantly became clear what the song should be and I Am the River #33 was born.” There is a fittingly spiritual feel to this song and Houston’s music is full of layered sonic and lyrical depth.
