New York is like a ghost town in the video for ‘Indecisive Moon’, directed by Emmy Award-winner Chris Cassidy. We see P.J. O’Connor busking on the empty streets of the city he loves, performing without an audience in the eerily still lockdown cityscapes. The video is as effective as the song is catchy, benefitting in particular from O’Connor’s excellent vocal melody and delivery. It’s like a love letter to New York, beginning with the text of John Steinbeck’s famous quote: “New York…its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it – once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.”
O’Connor explains his feelings for the city and what he tried to capture with the song: “‘Indecisive Moon’ is a love song to New York City. But things feel different now, in the midst of Covid-19. Fear, uncertainty, and even mortality have temporarily made this Superman of a city into just another Clark Kent. The chorus of, ‘May the lights of New York City shine on me wherever I go’ is a prayer of sorts. It’s a prayer that Gotham will inevitably get up off the mat and rise again.”
Look out for O’Connor’s forthcoming album, ‘Television’s Golden Age’, his debut solo release. The album was written while busking around Ireland after stints in the bands Radio 4 and The Bogmen.
