It’s the tale of the touring life – away for 5 days straight and then home to the family for a couple of days and then…repeat. It’s also a taste of an upcoming album from banjo star Alison Brown and other banjo star Steve Martin. Steve says of the song “I’m so happy to be back playing with Alison, Tim O’Brien and all the great musicians I’m so fortunate to work with. ‘5 Days Out, 2 Days Back’ is Alison’s and my tribute to all us road musicians.” It was Alison Brown who saw in a snap that there was one voice they needed to sing the song: “Tim is one of the all-time greatest singers in bluegrass. From the first demo we recorded together, he brought the perfect energy and spin to it, drawing on his many years of touring to bring the story to life.”
And what of Tim O’Brien, surely he had some thoughts? Well, yes he did and does: “Alison Brown and Steve Martin compress a year of a touring musician’s life into a few minutes on their new single. Our protagonist finds a path between the conflicting pulls of family and the road, plus I sing it really good!”
Completing the band are: Bryan Sutton (guitar, harmony vocals), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Todd Phillips (bass) and Vickie Vaughn (harmony vocals).

But it needed something else - it needed the warm,…
This latest song from banjo maestro Alison Brown and johnny-come-lately upstart picker Steve Martin* is a follow up to the pair's 2023 hit 'Foggy Morning Breaking.' It was the success of that which inspired Steve Martin to pen the lyrics for 'Bluegrass Radio', lyrics which celebrate the adoration that hitting…
Wednesday afternoon - at last. What a week it has been, tell me about it. Crazy. So much craziness all around - don't get me started. You know, it's a real relief to reach the Chilled Out Banjo Duet Instrumental Section of Americana UK this week. And what a Chilled…
Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
