@paul-kerr That's a tough one for me because in Drive By Truckers, he was part of one of my favourite bands, he played and sung on some of my favourite albums and live he absolutely killed it live with that band.  ... so he almost gets a pass from me because of that.

However most of his solo stuff is pretty uninspiring to me (with a few exceptions) which is really tough because I know how good he is and I know he could (if he wanted to) make an album that I would really love.

I guess what I'm saying is for me it's a 'taste' thing rather than a 'talent' thing, because I think he is super talented.

@darrenlumbroso I think Radiohead are wildly underrated. not since The Beatles has a band not only been the biggest band around, but also the best. I'm not saying you're wrong, nobody can quantifiably prove who is the best or worst (with disrespectful nods to acts like The 1975 (unbelievably dogshit)) but I think Radiohead are in a field of one, if you ask me (which you did not), but I could make a 10 song playlist that would absolutely change your mind, because I believe fans of great music recognise great music

Yip, when he was in The Truckers he was pretty much on the ball but thereafter not so much

on paper I should like them

Reminds me of that great Brian Clough line : "on paper we had a great team. Unfortunately the game is played on grass"

Regarding The Stones I have a huge soft spot for them - as @paul.kerr said they had a great run from "Let It Bleed" all the way through to "Some Girls" (with a case to be argued for "Emotional Rescue" and "Tattoo You") . On one of our regular AUK writers top ten things I think I had "Exile on Main Street" on there as a great Americana album of all time. Here they are at their imperious best:

@paul-kerr I get what the fuss is about, I just don’t share his fans’ enthusiasm for much of his work. Their unbridled devotion to him is also more than a bit off putting.

Bringing out the sawmill, cutting the 12 inch beams
Building a pattern, the reservoir to fill with dreams
Rings like Saturn telling their old story…
