How do you disentangle the two I suppose but are there any songs which worm their way into your head but you hate what they're about? My starter for ten is Willie Nelson and Toby Keith...

On and the video is AWFUL.

Rice, Rice, Hillman & Petersen included this modern murder ballad, “The Mystery That Won’t Go Away”, on their “Running Wild” album. It was written by Tony Rice’s brother, Larry. A nice tune and performance but the words and the subject matter of the murder of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey is just too much.

Honestly, I don't think I can separate them often. I could probably think of an example easier of 'a song that I love the lyrics/what they are about, even though musically it's not that special'

With a band like Drive-By Truckers it was the lyrics that drew me in at first and I grew to love the music, even though it wasn't really my thing at the time.

Neil Young "A Man Needs A Maid" - even as a teenager i found the lyrics a cringe and they haven't improved with age.  The sound is beautiful though.

There's a lot of Neil Young which makes me cringe Richard, even when I agree with the sentiment (exhibit A: "Living With War")

@markamericana OK I've done my count to ten.  Neil's body of work stretches over a long period and he's renowned for following his muse.  I can agree he's had a few duds over the years but 'Living With War' isn't one of them.  It was designed to take a simple message to a very divided USA and if you see the impact this simple messages had on the audiences who witnessed them on the CSNY tour (the Deja Vu video) these are pretty powerful words.  The art is right there in the face of the listener and getting a real reaction.

As I say Richard I agree with the sentiments but just reminded myself of lyrics for "Looking for a Leader" for example, if a year 7 student handed that in they'd probably get a C-, it's fairly excruciating!

Oh no question - Sweet Home Alabama stands alone; nowadays I actually feel guilty listening so switch off.

@markamericana I think you need to consider the audience for it and the desire for reaction.  If he was singing to me I'd agree with you; but in this instance he wouldn't have to and didn't intend to.  He was targetting the Fox News crowd.

I can't separate the two. If I don't like the lyrics I don't like the song.

Fair enough point Richard. And I wish I could compartmentalise in the same way Rick, my brain has other ideas!
