@rick-bayles I remember years ago going to La Fetes Humante and seeing a French rock'n'roll band (trying to sound like The Stones) with the singer screeching after each song, "Ici la rock'n'roll Americain" after singing all the songs in English.

We do get quite a lot of that here, with bands learning lyrics parrot fashion and invariably not actually understanding them. That said, a lot of French people speak very good English, better than my French!
@jon-aird yeah, unlike with The Waterboys, it seems it was much more behind the scenes where Springsteen's 'people' were aghast at what he was insisting on.
For me, I really thought he'd lost the plot when I first heard Froggie Went A-Courtin'! However, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions turned out to be another great album. Bar that song that is, IMO! 😂
Could have been a nod to Dylan, who also "sang" it on 'Good As I been to you' in 1993. It was placed at the same point - last track on the album. Could also be a double nod as The Byrds on their first couple of albums concluded with a "novelty" track such as "We'll meet again". To the best of my recollection The Byrds never recorded Froggie went a-courtin', but Roger McGuinn must have for the Folk Den (I haven't checked!).
Here's my favourite version of Froggie Went A Courting. I assume Dylan, Springsteen and many others saw this.
