First acts announced for Cambridge Folk Festival

Photographed in Nashville, 2/3/05

Always a good idea once the tickets have gone on sale – as they did ten days ago!  If you’re the cautious type who wants some idea what kind of festival Rhiannon Giddens will be curating then we can let you know the first headliners, as well as a few others.  Following on from the news of his first album in thirteen years John Prine will be a headliner – and so will Patti Smith, Janis Ian and Rosanne Cash.   And there’s more !

The long weekend of August 2nd-5th will also feature Kate Rusby & Friends, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Eliza Carthy and The Wayward Band plus blues legend Eric Bibb.  Americana pioneer Rhiannon Giddens will, naturally, also be taking a turn on the main stage .  Elsewhere there’s the superb Darlingside,  the excellent John Smith, Elephant Sessions, The Pierce Brothers, Irish Mythen,  Tamikrest, The Shee, Peatbog Faeries, John Moreland, Gordie MacKeeman And His Rhythm Boys, Damien O’Kane and Ron Block, The East Pointers, Darren Eedens And The Slim Pickins’, National Youth Folk Ensemble.  And more still to be announced.  An eclectic mix for certain.

Here’s one you can expect to hear.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
