Folk by the Oak’s Spell Songs project live in April – tickets go on sale today

Tickets go on sale today for an exclusive online stream of the live performance of Spell Songs. The project was commissioned by The Folk by the Oak festival team and filmed earlier this year during their Winter Tour at Birmingham Symphony Hall. Spell Songs is a multimedia project that includes Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux putting music to the words of The Lost Words and The Lost Spells books by Robert Macfarlane. The eclectic group from different countries and musical genres creates a unique visual and sound experience.

The performance stream heralds the second release by the project, ‘Spell Songs II: Let the Light in‘. Vinyl and cd recording are available for preorder now ahead of the May 20th release on the artist’s merch site. The package will include illustrations by Jackie Morris, photography by Elly Lucas and “insightful musings” by the seven musicians.

AUK reviewer David Chalfen said of the two-hour in-person performance, “throughout there is a sense of their joy and awareness of their serendipitous coming together at this time to do this glorious work“.

Tickets for the streamed performance cost £16 can be found on the Folk by the Oak Side Door streaming site.
