Mary Gauthier “Amsterdam” – feeling alright, tonight

Hell’s teeth but this is a good song.  Of course it is – there are a lot of special artists in Americana but few as special as Mary Gauthier.   This verbal painting of the feelings on a perfect night in ‘Amsterdam‘ has the touch of the Dylan’s about it, it could happily sit alongside ‘When I Paint My Masterpiece.

Amsterdam‘ comes from Gauthier’s new album ‘Dark Enough To See The Stars’ which is out on June 3rd via Thirty Tigers.  And if it’s all as good as this – and there’s no reason to think it won’t be – then it’s an album destined for those end of year lists.  So, let’s just imagine another 200 words of me saying how great it is and then cut to the chase and listen to it, would that be ok?  That’s what I’m going to do, anyway.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
