Mindy Murray “Did Ya Vote” – well?

Mindy Murray’s song is a timely encouragement to be sure to exercise one’s choice in an election, and on ‘Did Ya Vote‘ a strong endorsement is given by stories of the Suffragist movement, a reminder, if it is needed, that the broadening of the right to vote is a relatively recent thing, and like all steps forward there’s always the chance for the step backwards.  Seems a bit of a leap, maybe?  Well – take a look at some of the things some of the candidates have said and maybe it’s not such a leap.

Mindy Murray’s ‘Did Ya Vote? was written in 2020 with a virtual assist from close friend and River Driver bandmate, Kevin McCloskey.  It was never formally released, but was submitted to the International Women’s Freedom Song organization where it was recognized as a winning anthem in 2020. The song was tucked away until this year when it was brought out and dusted off in hopes of helping to “get the vote out.

Mindy Murray asserts that “‘Did Ya Vote’ celebrates the strength of the women who fought for suffrage and the power that modern women can yield by exercising that right.”  At no point does the song say who to vote for, but we reckon you can figure that out for yourselves.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
